The Internet has progressed rapidly from the early days of Web1, with static texts and visuals, to the current version – Web2. Companies such as Amazon, Etsy, Facebook, Google, Salesforce, and Uber create online structures enabling a wide range of economic activities. In the Web2 manifestation of platform economies, platform operators have unprecedented control, consolidating more power than factory owners in the early industrial revolution – while still claiming to be only an intermediary and tech infrastructure provider.

Web3’s main innovations are decentralization and permissionless access. Anyone on the network has permission to use a service – in other words, permission isn't required. No one can block or deny access to the service. Moreover, tokenized ownership allows network stakeholders to participate in decision-making and value accrual of the network.

In her keynote, Angela will map out the potential of permissionless networks, and how the design of economic incentives plays an important role in securing and growing these networks.

In the upcoming research sessions, we will examine a new paper by Jason Milionis, Ciamac C. Moallemi and Tim Roughgarden published in May 2023.

Abstract:
We consider the impact of trading fees on the profits of arbitrageurs trading against an automated marker marker (AMM) or, equivalently, on the adverse selection incurred by liquidity providers due to arbitrage. We extend the model of Milionis et al. [2022] for a general class of two asset AMMs to both introduce fees and discrete Poisson block generation times. In our setting, we are able to compute the expected instantaneous rate of arbitrage profit in closed form. When the fees are low, in the fast block asymptotic regime, the impact of fees takes a particularly simple form: fees simply scale down arbitrage profits by the fraction of time that an arriving arbitrageur finds a profitable trade.

Rewarding contributors in a burn-and-mint economy

Any crypto project planning a token distribution event inevitably discusses an airdrop at some point. Airdrops are a popular way to draw attention to a token launch and reward early users or contributors. However, airdrops can be gamed, and they are gamed. With any AML/KYC or any other form of verification in place, it’s easy to set up thousands of fake accounts and claim tokens. As a result, airdrop farming communities coordinate setting up accounts to pull out maximum value.

We could view this phenomenon as a failure in system design. However, most projects consider airdrops as a marketing tool, serving as a means of user acquisition, and reducing operational costs and legal risks compared to selling tokens to retail users. 
Despite the fact that over 90% of airdrop tokens might be sold within a year, the promotional impact for the token launch is huge. LooksRare and Blur airdrops drove market narratives which helped to solidify their valuations, even though potentially built on wash trades seeking to make a quick profit. As the saying goes, the best marketing for crypto startups is to make a lot of people rich in a short period. 

The challenge lies in the ingenuity of individuals who have taken a simple concept like airdrops and turned it into an industrial-scale operation. These individuals manage hundreds of accounts on a network, receiving millions of dollars worth of tokens. While they do the work of stress-testing a network, they also have a significant impact on the price of an asset. If a token lacks sufficient liquidity at the time of listing, a single airdrop farmer can depress the asset's price for months.

The concept of Loss versus Rebalancing (LVR) as a metric for measuring portfolio performance in Automated Market Makers (AMMs) is an interesting one, as it seeks to provide a more accurate representation of the losses incurred by liquidity providers (LPs) due to the actions of arbitrageurs.

Traditionally, the metric of impermanent loss has been used to assess the performance of LPs in AMM systems, but it has been argued that this metric does not adequately capture the full impact of arbitrage activity on LP profitability. 
The LVR metric aims to address this issue by taking into account not only the losses incurred by LPs due to price changes but also the costs associated with actively rebalancing their portfolio in response to those changes.

In these research sessions, we will examine the existing literature on the LVR metric and engage in a qualified discussion on its potential merits and limitations as a tool for evaluating LP performance in AMM systems.

The [Tokenomics Calculator](https://www.tokenomics-calculator.com/) (TC) is a framework and simulations engine to verify a tokenomics setup.  Based on a number of pre-defined questions, the TC finds the best possible design within a search space of millions of different variants. Moreover, the setup can be chosen based on particular optimization goals, such as Rewards Sustainability, or  Investor Value. TC simulation outcome covers recommendations on Token Supply, Token Distribution and Vesting Schemes, Token Sale Details such as token value and supply by round, and more.

Power users can modify the scenarios, fine-tune any parameter, and further explore the models output (paid version). The extended version also includes a 12+ pages detailed report of the generated tokenomics to share with stakeholders, and token price projections.  

TC is made to automatically validate business ideas, and make sure they are feasible from a tokenomics perspective. It allows token engineers to run a proof-of-concept as a starting point to explore more sophisticated designs with your project stakeholders.

Healthy, fair and efficient DAO Decision Making is one of the most essential ingredients for making our vision of decentralized autonomous organizations come true. Over the last weeks, TE Academy ran a program to [dive deeper into DAO Votings and Computational Choice](https://tokenengineering.net/course/6pCRO5ssR/). 

Computational Social Choice (COMSOC) deals with designing and analyzing algorithmic and game-theoretic principles that apply to making community decisions that respect the preferences of the community members. 

This includes tasks as varied as how to divide resources among agents, match agents to resources, and make joint decisions that are acceptable and beneficial to the community as a whole. Such algorithms are crucial in crypto both for network-level operations such as selecting a validator committee and reaching a voting-based consensus and governance-level operations such as changing a protocol or deciding on how to use a DAO treasury.

This event is the starting point for a TE Hackathon about DAO Rewards Systems. 40 community members will work on related challenges over the next weeks.

The goals:
• get an in-depth introduction to various DAO rewards systems in production, and discuss with DAO stakeholders 
• learn to explore DAO data and verify our assumptions about DAO contributors 
• meet other Governauts and collaborate on new token-based compensation mechanisms 
• learn how to model rewards systems and apply your cadCAD skills!

DAO Rewards Assemblage

This 3 session workshop is presented by Reflexer Labs, Block Science, and TE Academy.

The recently open sourced model is ripe for exploration and tinkering. These workshops will cover an introduction to the RAI Protocol and a walk-through on how to execute & modify the model itself. 

Session 1 - Thursday, November 4th, 2021 @ 4pm CET Introduction to RAI & Operational Digital Twins, and how to run the RAI digital twin model 

Session 2 - Thursday, November 11th 2021 @ 4pm CET Understanding the RAI Digital Twin, walkthrough data inputs / outputs, and model execution cycle 

Session 3 - Thursday, November 18th 2021 @ 4pm CET Leveraging the RAI Digital Twin, changing the cadCAD model parameters and introducing the behavioral model
